Frequently Asked Questions . . .
What Should I bring on a boat Tour?
We suggest that you prepare for our tours as you would for a few hours at the beach...
You may want to bring:

Not sure if you need it? Bring it along! We have plenty of space and dry storage for your belongings.
is it difficult to get in and out of the boat?
Boarding the boat at the pier is similar to climbing stairs or a short step ladder. With a little help, most people can board. Getting in and out on the beach for shelling trips and beach days can be slightly more challenging for individuals with mobility issues, as you'll have to sit on the bow, scoot to the front of the boat and pivot your legs around to the step ladder.

Should I tip the captain?
Tips are greatly appreciated! It is customary to tip the captain 15-20%. If you don't have cash, just let the captain know how much you would like to add to the card on file at the end of your trip, or present him with another card that you would like to use.

Can we Bring More than Six if we have some smaller passengers?
Breakwater's boats are limited to six passengers. We may have availability for larger groups with our sister company, Eco Endeavors. Please call 305 902 4772 for availability for larger groups.
What happens if the the weather is bad?
We take your safety and comfort seriously and will never expect you to proceed with a tour in bad weather, or charge you for a tour that is prevented by weather! If inclement weather prevents your tour, we'll do our best to reschedule. In the event we can't reschedule, you'll receive a full refund. If you are concerned about the weather, please give us a call. We are happy to have a candid conversation with you about what to expect and whether rescheduling your tour should be considered.
Will I get Wet?
While tube riders, wake boarders and water skiers should come prepared to get wet, during the typical dolphin tour or shelling tour you shouldn't experience much more than a little spray. A stop on the beach may require that you step into ankle deep water, depending on conditions and the location of the stop.
is Sea Sickness an issue on your tours?
We operate in the protected waters of the 10,000 islands and most trips are very smooth and calm. In certain wind directions and when visiting some locations we may encounter rougher seas. If you are concerned with motion sickness, please make the captain aware as we can typically alter the course of your trip to ensure a smoother ride.
Is there shade on the boat?
Yes! All of our dolphin tour boats have plenty of shade for the whole group.
Can we Swim with the Dolphin?
While you may have seen advertisements for swimming with captive dolphin elsewhere in Florida, you cannot swim with wild dolphin. There's a federal law called the Marine Mammal Act that prevents it nationwide. All of the dolphin that you will encounter on our tours in the 10,000 Islands are wild dolphin in their natural habitat. There are no businesses on or around Marco Island or Naples that offer swimming with dolphin. But don't worry! While we are committed to operating safely and responsibly around our flippered friends, we still have incredible encounters with them. In fact, we often hear from guests that have been swimming with dolphin in captivity that they prefer the encounters with wild dolphin they experience on our tours!
Is there a better time to see dolphin?
We always find dolphin on our tours! In fact, we guarantee it or your next trip is on us. The bottle-nosed dolphin of Marco Island and the 10,000 Islands live here year-round and our expert guides know all their favorite haunts. The only time of day that can be slightly less opportune for dolphin watching is at sunset. Sunset tours are great, but when the light is lower, it can be more difficult to spot dolphin from afar.
What kind of tour boats do you use?
Our Dolphin Tour Boats are Custom Designed 25ft. Carolina Skiffs. These boats offer plenty of space for your group and all of your gear, while still being small and maneuverable enough to explore where the larger tour boats can't.
There is plenty of shade and our watersports boats are equipped with a custom tower to maximize your tubing, wakeboarding and waterskiing experience. See the photos below . . .

Are these trips suitable for small children?
Yes! Our tours are truly great for all ages. Keep in mind that children are required by law to wear a life jacket and infants must be old enough to wear an infant life vest. We provide all life vests and there is plenty of shade on the boat. The Dolphin and Shelling Tour is particularly popular with small kids. The stop on the beach breaks up the boat tour and allows some hands-on exploration.
What type of wildlife will we see?
In addition to dolphin, we regularly see manatee, rays, tarpon, sea turtles, osprey, wading birds and much more. If you have a particular interest, please let us know!
